The UnderBelly put out a good cd ,not a great one. Roxie Ray the guest vocalist from Dojo Cuts is featured on a number of cuts, too many for my tastes. Her intonation is cool but the lyrics do absolutely nothing for me. It always strikes me wrong when a guest singer( male or female ) is featured on a debut recording, like it was initially weak compositionally so the band diverged by adding some variety. It is fast paced and the guitarwork is strong but there was not enough meat to the songs for me, like the composition, lyrics and make up of the band was almost an afterthought or perhaps the band is still in transition. Jamming only goes so far and the complexity and interplay between instruments suffers , making the uneven trade of creativity for speed . Once again people, composition is everything if the talent is inherent. It is like most things musical best to practice alot and then improvise some in the studio. That said, the recording is a thoroughly enjoyable romp through Funk Territory and makes one hope for a follow up that employs all the elements already mentioned to potentially make a really great 2nd disc.Anything is possible....but is it probable?
