Johann Joachim Quantz (16971773) was the foremost German virtuoso flautist of his day, composing in excess of 500 works during the course of his long career. The works presented here reveal the composers continuing adaptation to changes in musical taste and his adoption of new musical forms. All seven flute sonatas appearing on this disc of world premiere recordings were performed from unpublished music manuscripts once belonging to Frederick the Great, King of Prussia from 1740-86.

First, I'm a big fan of period instruments and on this recording Mary Oleskiewicz plays a replica flute after Quantz himself made for his boss, Frederick the Great - already deserves 3*! - the seven sonatas on the recording are flute with basso continuo, i.e. David Schulenberg on harpsichord and Stephanie Vial on cello. Second, these are excellent performances which are well recorded by Hungaroton - this CD received a 'thumbs up' Fanfare review and I certainly agree with the comments. The recording is at least a 4* performance in my mind, but I will add the extra star for the use of such a historic period flute.
