This is an excellent album from early in his career. Steve moved to Marin County CA after he made Rock Salt and Nails to teach guitar and said Jessie Colin Young and Van Morrison convinced him to make this album. I think there was a Van Morrison song on this album that Steve asked to have removed and not reissued. I may have all of Steve Young's recorded work so I had to get this CD since I have most of it is on vinyl. Nice to hear it without scratches. Steve lived near Rockford Illinois for a while to make Honky Tonk Man and that is where I grew up. It was a revelation to go to little venues in that area and hear an exceptional performer for a few dollars and a drink. I was fortunate to see many iterations of Steve. I found a copy of Stone Country his first effort to go mainstream and saw him with a full Nashville band when Renegade Picker was supposed to be his breakout country album. As he said Elvis died the day that album was released, and RCA put everything but reissues of Elvis on hold. He recorded in Sweden and then put out a self-published synthesizer album for a tour. I bought those from Steve and I don't think they ever made it to record stores, When I visited Australia he was more popular there than in the US. Tim Winton an eminent Australian novelist wrote Dirt Music, that covers Steve as a inspiration to some young Australian musicians. I asked him about that, and he said Winton loved his stuff was always trying to get him in a documentary. The last times I saw him were at house concerts. He said the money from the Eagles, Dolly Parton, and other covers of Seven Bridges Road and a few concerts a year were enough to keep him in a comfortable but not extravagant lifestyle.
