Description
Product description Seven More Minutes Amazon.com Moving on from the retro-chic, turbo-geek look and sound of the first disc, Rentals frontman Matt Sharp grows out his hair, puts on a polka-dot shirt, and decides to rock. Seven More Minutes starts out with a bouncy ode to the power of positive drinking and the hedonistic, upbeat mood from then on is almost irrepressible. Even songs with titles such as "Say Goodbye Forever" sound more cheerful than depressed. The Rentals also have a great supporting cast this time around, including Tim Wheeler from Ash and Damon Albarn from Blur. Petra Haden is back and her vocals are mixed to a creamy perfection; on the absolutely gorgeous "My Head Is in the Sun," Maya Rudolph whispers a comforting chorus. The party atmosphere fades on the album's ennui-soaked closer, "Jumping Around," which leaves you with the downside of a debauched lifestyle. Still, it's not enough to sink the overall buoyant, jubilant mood of the disc. Seven More Minutes is 57 minutes and 42 seconds more of the drug you've been looking for. --Nick Berry

I really enjoy listening to the Rentals second album `Seven More Minutes'.The Rentals are Matt Sharp `Weezer's' bassist and his band of members playing guitars, moog, syths, and drums. With Petra Haden's from That Dog and Maya Rudolph's heavenly voices alternately signing or backing Matt in most of the songs. Guest vocalists include Miki Berenyi from `Lush', Tim Wheeler from `Ash', Donna Mathews from `Elastica', and Damon Albarn from `Blur'. Even though there are a lot of guests Matt is in charge and is able to make the album totally work and not sound like his guests album. The album is rock/pop and it perfectly crafts together the different instruments and vocals to make an album of strong songs with musical/vocal progressions that evoke different moods. Each song is different than the other while still allowing the album to be cohesive.(Getting By, The Cruise, Barcelona, Keep Sleeping, Must be Wrong) Are fun rock/pop songs.(Hello, hello) is a rock/pop songs but not as fun as the ones above.(She says it's Alright, Overlee, It's Alright (reprise), My head is in the sun, Jumping Around.) are slower pop/rock ballad type songs. However, about half way through `Overlee' has a progression of moog/synths and guitars that gets pretty heavy.(Say Goodbye Forever, The Man with two brains) are sexy rock songs courtesy of Donna Mathews of Elastica, Sharon Mcconochie, and Petra Haden.Big Daddy C. is a cool rappy rock/pop song with a strong chorus courtesy of Damon Albarn of Blur.Insomnia is a fast rock song. From what I read Matt Sharp spent some time in Europe and most of the songs are able to portray the atmosphere of the subjects of the lyrics. From parties, to women that are more than friends but not exclusive, to dealing with emotions and feelings that reinforce and sometimes contradict this commitment free lifestyle.`Seven minutes later' is a well-made fun-rocking album that I recommend.
