Description
Hospital Records proudly presents the debut long-player from the illusive and ingenious Mitekiss. Flirting with an array of drum & bass styles, ‘Crate Six Seven’ inhabits the deeper realms of liquid-jazz, soul and ambient jungle across 14 tracks. The album’s title track encapsulates the essence of Mitekiss’ well-known style with soothing tones and a hypnotic percussion guiding the track, along with the enchanting ‘Hutan’, with its silky and delicately soft sonics. This is pretty much standard D&B in the general ballpark of lounge, liquid or intelligent. Initially, some nice organic-sounding loops are set up, based mainly around sample-work, and then proceed nowhere for a long, long time. Ultimately, if you look at the album length, you could be inclined to think that your money has been well spent. Unfortunately, 90% of the tracks outstay their welcome and you could quite easily cap runtimes to a couple of minutes each without losing any significant highlights. Although some of the sound design is initially interesting, there is little musical development across the tracks and the whole album feels a little rushed, ill-considered and, dare I say it, yawn-inducing. Some of the vocals are interesting but the songs are ultimately unmemorable in the long run. I can't help thinking that Mitekiss chose the path of least resistance at almost every juncture, since little effort has been expended on building up the sound palette. 'Oooh, shall we bring some more instruments in now? We've been repeating this for a while now...Nah, just mute some tracks, add some reverb and then bring them in again'. Path of least resistance right there. This is an abject lesson in how you can start with a good idea and then rinse it dry by doing very little with it. Rhythm-wise, expect the usual suspects. All your favourite old school sampled breaks are there, although some more effort could have been made to alter them, disguise them or program them in more interesting ways. The mix is not bad, but it is rudimentary, with very little shift in dynamic intensity. If you want liquid, lounge or intelligent D&B with some verve, don't start here. Have a listen to Tokyo Prose, Calibre or Conduct and get a feel for what the genre can really do when it's rolling sixes. Saying that, I bought this album based on the strength of the thirty second samplers I heard on Amazon, so there was enough to get my ears pricking. It's just a shame that more thought did not go in to developing those snippets into full blown tracks..
